A few months back, I was really upset by something. A video game, of all things. Oddworld Inhabitants, developers of “Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee” and “Oddworld: Abe’s Exxodus”, sold out to Microsoft.
They had been developing “Munch’s Oddysee”, the second (sic) in their planned quintology of games, for PlayStation 2. Their games are full of dark humor, telling the story of alien creatures’ fight against a giant evil corporation that’s taking over their planet and ruining their lives.
Then they sold out to Microsoft. They announced that “Munch’s Oddysee” would now be exclusive to Microsoft’s Xbox console. Which of course, means I’ll never get to play it.
Well, I know it’s schadenfreude, which is very unattractive… but I’m pleased to learn that now the software has been released, Microsoft has canned practically the entire team at Oddworld. So much for the CEO’s assurance that Microsoft was the best way for them to fulfil their artistic vision.
It’s the same old story: If you get into bed with Microsoft, make sure you have plenty of Astraglide.
