It’s no use. I tried to just ignore the state of the servers in this group and get on with being a developer, but finally I snapped. Today I’m having a major cleanup, making sure that all the database and web site templates are in one place, backed up, named something sensible, cataloged, and accessible.
All the servers are now catalogued in a database, along with information about their disk partitioning scheme, IP addresses, installed software, OS patch levels, and so on. Each server’s desktop or login prompt now indicates its correct name.
