Which way is home?
Minnesota is a lot more American than Boston. It’s spread out, the roads are wide, strip malls are ubiquitous, buildings are ugly and box shaped, and SUVs and trucks are everywhere. In my tired Sunday state, it made me feel very alienated. I sat in the car letting it all wash over me.
When we got to the airport, they had CNN playing. There were clips of the celebrations of the Queen’s golden jubilee. As a (small ‘r’) republican, that made me feel very alienated too.
As I sat on the plane, I realized that I don’t really feel like I belong anywhere.
