Compressability of music

I find it interesting to compare how well different kinds of music compress to MP3 using LAME –alt-preset standard. Generally speaking, electronica compresses less well, because pure triangle and square waveforms have lots of harmonics and fourier transform into a huge number of sine waves.

The new record holder is Fischerspooner #1, on which many tracks require 200kbps+ average bitrate to represent them with acceptable lack of error. The bitrate graph is interesting too, it comes out bi-modal for several tracks…
