I don’t know which is more amazing—that the UK didn’t repeal the Witchcraft Act of 1735 until 1951, or that a woman was convicted of witchcraft in 1944.

It’s worth mentioning that the Witchcraft Act of 1735 was inspired by the Enlightenment view that there was no such thing as witchcraft, therefore anyone claiming to be one or to have magical powers was a con artist and would be punished accordingly. I think it also forbade accusing someone else of being a witch.
