The original Ultravox! (with exclamation mark) was John Foxx’s punk-era band. Over the course of two years they released three albums, each in a distinct style with transitional elements.

The self-titled “Ultravox!” was a strange mix of glam rock and reggae, with violin solos and angry noise. It had lyrics about being a man-machine before Kraftwerk mined that trope. “Ha! Ha! Ha!” was punk, before collapsing into detached electro-pop for the final track. That sound continued on the final album, “Systems of Romance”. Gary Numan was inspired by them.

Now Theartsdesk has an interview with John Foxx about how it all happened.
