How do you trace a gun in the USA?

On TV, it happens by magic. In reality, the request goes to the National Tracing Center in Virginia, a single office with 50 staff. They have no computers ā€” NRA-sponsored legislation prohibits them from having an actual database. Instead, they receive almost 2 million new gun purchase records a month, on paper, and scan them to microfilm which they are allowed to look through manually. And they only receive the paper records in the first place if the gun store goes out of business
